PhD Studentship, The Importance of Micro-Climate Refuges for Mammal Responses to Climate Change & Human Disturbance, Bournemouth University, Talbot Campus, UK

Climate change and deforestation of tropical rainforests are threatening the livelihoods of millions of people as these globally important ecosystems provide food and medicines, store carbon, influence global climate, provide water supplies, and have high biodiversity. Because tropical animals are adapted to the relatively stable tropical climate they are disproportionately sensitive to climate change. Still, most climate change research occurs in temperate zones. In particular, more information is needed on how tropical animals may use micro-climatic refuges within a forest to avoid harsh climatic conditions and manage exposure to biting insect and parasites (which prefer hot wet places). We have the unique opportunity to determine the role micro-refuges play in buffering primates against climate change at a well-studied UNESCO World Heritage site in Indonesia and identify how the availability of micro-refuges changes as a result of human disturbance. Specifically, the project links new approaches

and developments in micro-climate research and drone image recording and analysing techniques to determine (1) how primates select micro-habitats (height, exposure) to manage thermal regulation and minimise exposure to biting insects and parasites; and (2) how the availability of the required micro-habitats is affected by human influences.

The project is timely because we are at the brink of a global extinction crisis but scientists are still struggling to predict how species will respond to climate change and human disturbance. In addition, starting this project now means it can fully benefit from the establishment of a Bournemouth University-led international network of micro-climate specialists (Leverhulme International Networking Grant 2017 to P. Gillingham et al.). This ensures that the project is connected to similar projects across the globe and will have an international audience during the network’s workshops to improve methods and share findings on the newest emerging theories and techniques.

Entry requirements:
Preferably a 1st class honours degree and/or a relevant Master’s degree with distinction or equivalent Grade Point Average. If English is not your first language you’ll need IELTS 6.5 (Academic) or above.

The project is on “Body size dynamics of cephalopods across the Pliensbachian-Toarcian crisis”.
The successful candidate will be involved in taxonomic – ecological analysis of Pliensbachian-Toarcian ammonites and belemnites with a focus of quantitative sampling of cephalopods from France, Germany, Portugal and Spain.

This project is one of eight projects embedded in the interdisciplinary Research Unit FOR 2332 TERSANE: Temperature-Related Stresses as a Unifying Principle in Ancient Extinctions. The research unit combines high-resolution geological field studies with meta-analyses, physiological studies and sophisticated analysis of fossil occurrence data on ancient hyperthermal events to reveal the rate and magnitude of warming, potential causes, impact on marine life, and the mechanisms which led to ecological change and extinction. Full-time, Tenure-track Instructor position in Invertebrate Biology, University of Calgary

The primary activity for faculty members in the Instructor-stream is in teaching and learning, especially in undergraduate programs. Scholarship (pedagogical and discipline-specific) and service are also expected, but form smaller components of the position. We seek a broadly trained individual familiar with systematics who can teach both lab-based and field-based courses to enrich our undergraduate programs and complement existing strengths in animal physiology, development, comparative anatomy and paleobiology. Preference will be given to candidates with strengths in aquatic invertebrate biology.

The successful candidate will teach a range of invertebrate zoology courses, including courses integrating invertebrate systematics, diversity, function, behaviour and ecology. The main objective of the studentship is to create a biodiversity map of invertebrate communities using environmental DNA samples derived from the Eifel National Park and to monitor species/ ecosystems over time. We are seeking to appoint a Teaching Fellow within the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour to provide teaching duties and support the learning of undergraduate students in the areas of animal behaviour, behavioural ecology and in ecology more widely. We seek an individual who can contribute innovative and engaging teaching in our degrees, including both lecture-based delivery and running practical sessions. The appointee will also be involved in field courses, both around campus and further afield, and will be expected to supervise final year project students. In addition, the role will include a substantial administrative component, as well as providing pastoral support for students.

Appointees will be expected to have a proven track record of teaching excellence to undergraduate students, and ideally to postgraduate students as well. You will need to demonstrate a real enthusiasm for curriculum development and the teaching of ecological topics in lectures, laboratory classes and field courses, as well as the ability to supervise final year projects. Experience with course and programme coordination is also desirable, as is experience in providing pastoral support.

This is a full time post for a fixed term appointment of 5 years, available from 1 May 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates must have a doctorate in the relevant field.

The SFS program on Eastern Himalayan Forests and Rural Livelihoods (summer) and Himalayan Environment and Society in Transition (fall and spring semesters), located in Bhutan seeks an enthusiastic, team-oriented individual to serve as part of a residential team of faculty and staff who deliver an interdisciplinary, hands-on learning experience to students spending a semester abroad. Partnering with the Bhutanese Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment (UWICE), this program will present a rich learning landscape for students exploring people’s relationship with the environment.

On a contract basis, during the six-week summer program, the Resident Lecturer will co-teach the Himalayan Forests, Watersheds, and Rural Livelihood course, and during the fall and spring semesters, will teach the Mountain Ecology course as well as teach one-third of the Directed Research course.

RVRC is seeking applications for the position of Instructors/Lecturers to join its motivated and exciting team starting Academic Year 2016/2017. Successful candidates with suitable expertise and relevant experience will contribute to the development and teaching of two core RVRC modules, as follows:

sustainability (integrated interdisciplinary approach)

Instructors/Lecturers are employed as full-time RVRC faculty on the Educator track. The positions may also be residential or non-residential.

RVRC currently admits only Year One students from five faculties/schools, namely Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, School of Computing and School of Design & Environment. Junior Specialist (Curatorial Assistant), UC Davis Center for Plant Diversity (herbarium)

This position is responsible for assisting Center for Plant Diversity (herbarium) staff in specimen curation and overseeing outreach events, including those associated with the Davis Botanical Society. Tasks include:

– Supervising undergraduates in specimen curation, including label-making, georeferencing, imaging, mounting, and filing. (50%)
– Planning, recruiting helpers for, and attending Center for Plant Diversity outreach events (some of which are on weekends or evenings), such as curation volunteer days, museum botanical teas, Biodiversity Museum Day, Picnic Day, workshops, and botanical lectures. (30%)
– Supervising the processing of membership gifts received by the Davis Botanical Society. (5%)
– Assisting with specimen database and website maintenance, as well as museum Facebook page, including interfacing with the Consortium of California Herbaria and other database aggregators, updating events pages on website and Facebook, and trouble-shooting problems that may arise. (15%)

Qualifications:
– B.S./B.A. in Life Sciences required; M.S./M.A. in Life Sciences or Museum Collection Management is preferred.
– Previous herbarium experience is required.
– Previous experience with plant taxonomy and knowledge of flowering plant families and genera is required.
– Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and Access is required; experience with Dreamweaver is preferred.
– Familiarity with world geography/place names is preferred.
– Experience with georeferencing specimens is preferred.
– Experience working with specimen imaging is preferred.
– All aspects of this position require great attention to detail and organizational skills.
– Good written and verbal communication skills are required.
– Good people skills are required; experience giving tours or working with groups is preferred.

PostDoctoral Fellow at Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh

A one-year NSF-funded postdoctoral fellowship is available immediately and provides taxonomic, systematic, and curatorial training in entomology at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. The fellow will conduct original systematic research on a targeted insect lineage, so as to enable imaging and data capture as specified by our NSF-funded project. The individual will work directly with one or more curators in the Section of Invertebrate Zoology, who will serve as supervisors and mentors throughout the term of the fellowship.

* Eligibility.— Candidate must possess a doctoral degree (or international equivalent) in entomology or a related field and must be able to conduct original research that will lead to the advancement of scientific knowledge at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Research interests should focus on collection-based, field-oriented studies in systematics that will have broad applications and impacts in theory, conservation, evolution, and/or biogeography. Also necessary is a publication record in international journals demonstrating adequacy for the position offered.
* Knowledge, Skills, Abilities.— The candidate must have prior graduate training in entomology with an emphasis on lineages that are well-represented but under-worked in the CMNH collection, including Siphonaptera, Mecoptera, Odonata, Hymenoptera, Heteroptera, and others (less emphasis on Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Homoptera). The capacity to talk with and engage public audiences about her/his research while participating in public events at the museum is highly encouraged, as is participation as a lecturer in museum-sponsored scientific seminars.
* Funding.— The fellow will receive an annual salary of $38,000, plus fringe benefits.

Two Full Professor Positions in Ecology, The Asian School of the Environment, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

1. Full Professor in Tropical Forest Ecology/Ecosystem Science

As part of the transformation, NTU will partner with the Smithsonian Institution, particularly the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, to expand science and education related to the Smithsonian Global Earth Observatories: including the Center for Tropical Forest Science–Forest Global Earth Observatory and the newly established Marine Global Earth Observatory (Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network). The successful candidate will also be appointed as a Research Associate with the Smithsonian and expected to spend time each year in Washington, DC, and in Panama. For this position, we seek an individual who has established a world-class research program that deals with current topics of tropical forest science, such as population and community ecology, ecosystem science, forest–atmosphere interactions, forest–soil interactions, and global change effects on forest diversity and function. The successful candidate will take a leadership role in the expansion of science related to the Asian network of the Smithsonian’s Center for Tropical Forest Science–Forest Global Earth Observatory.

2. Full Professor in Ecology

We seek an internationally prominent ecologist who works in marine or terrestrial systems and who is interested in ecological interactions at multiple scales. The new position in ecology will complement the Earth Observatory of Singapore’s core strengths in natural hazards and Earth systems science, the Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering’s expertise in structure and function of complex microbial communities, and the Complexity Institute’s research in coupled human and natural systems.

For both positions, NTU seeks scientists with outstanding track records in the field of (tropical) forest or marine ecology. The successful candidates will establish the School as a leader in studies of tropical ecological and ecosystem processes.

The candidates are expected to:

• Establish a world-class research program,
• Play a leading role in the formation of the School,
• Enhance the School’s visibility as an international leader in education and research in Ecology and Ecosystem Science,
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Ecology and related Environmental Sciences,
• Actively collaborate with NTU faculty and researchers with existing strengths in Earth Systems Science and Environmental Life Sciences, and
• Work to strengthen interactions between NTU and the Smithsonian Institution in building and enhancing the Forest and Marine Global Earth Observatories Programs.
